The Eagles took 18 months between their fourth and fifth albums, reportedly
spending eight months in the studio recording Hotel California. The album was
also their first to be made without Bernie Leadon, who had given the band
much of its country flavor, and with rock guitarist Joe Walsh. As a result, the
album marks a major leap for the Eagles from their earlier work, as well as a
stylistic shift toward mainstream rock. An even more important aspect,
however, is the emergence of Don Henley as the band's dominant voice, both
as a singer and a lyricist. On the six songs to which he contributes, Henley
sketches a thematic statement that begins by using California as a metaphor
for a dark, surreal world of dissipation; comments on the ephemeral nature of
success and the attraction of excess; branches out into romantic
disappointment; and finally sketches a broad, pessimistic history of America
that borders on nihilism. Of course, the lyrics kick in some time after one has
appreciated the album's music, which marks a peak in the Eagles' playing.
Early on, the group couldn't rock convincingly, but the rhythm section of
Henley and Meisner has finally solidified, and the electric guitar work of Don
Felder and Joe Walsh has arena-rock heft. In the early part of their career,
the Eagles never seemed to get a sound big enough for their ambitions; after
changes in producer and personnel, as well as a noticeable growth in
creativity, Hotel California unveiled what seemed almost like a whole new
band. It was a band that could be bombastic, but also one that made music
worthy of the later tag of "classic rock," music appropriate for the arenas and
stadiums the band was playing. The result was the Eagles' biggest-selling
regular album release, and one of the most successful rock albums ever.

Gerry Rafferty is a huge talent, but a reluctant star. Management struggles
and sundry other hindrances limited his output, but couldn't avert the Scot
from releasing two legendary singles -- the Tarantino-ized "Stuck in the Middle
With You" and the unforgettable "Baker Street," the latter included on this
record. Just a glimpse of John Patrick Byrne's cool cover art lets the listener
know City to City houses Rafferty's day in the sun as he conquers the world
one metropolis at a time, his guitar and amp in tow. Setting out in his
apocalyptic "Ark," each song radiates the confidence of a master craftsman
cruising in his prime, constructing brilliant pop confections with top-flight
support while awaiting the crunch of civilization. The dreamy reality check
"Baker Street" rightfully remains one of the greatest cuts in pop history.
Forever-lost B-side "Big Change in Weather" further demonstrates Rafferty
was on a rare roll. Domestic valentine "Right Down the Line" snugly followed
to the height of the charts, and third release, "Home and Dry," while not of
an immortal status, stands as a quality song. He even stomps out a smooth
hoedown on the title track. Rafferty's turns of phrase and tight composition
skills create a fresh sound and perspective all his own. Any diverse style (and
he attempts many) filters through his unique mindset, resulting in a classic
platter buoyed by many moments of sheer genius. "Whatever's written in
your heart, that's all that matters."

After their reunion in 2006 I was under the impression that Cynic were back
together for a couple of shows only. It seems like one thing led to another
and here we are, 15 whole years after "Focus" with a new Cynic album! If I
was prepared, "Traced In Air" would have been a much anticipated release!
But I wasn't, so this kind of came out of the blue for me. And I think that's a
good thing in my case because anticipations sometimes consume an album
before the actual hearings take place.
Over the last 15 years people have debated and tried to come to a safe
conclusion about Cynic's contribution to the heavy metal music. I, myself
often try to think the best way of justifying the reasons why Cynic became
such a legend considering they're (were) a single-album band. I didn't have
any satisfying explanation until "Traced In Air" hit me. But I won't elaborate
on this issue until this review is over.
Let's introduce the new Cynic, shall we? Comparing the new line-up with the
old one there's only one difference to be found. Jason Gobel is not in the
reunion while Paul Masvidal, Sean Reinert and Sean Malone form the core of
the "new" band. Now 3 out of 4 add up to a pretty good percentage if you
ask me! Info says Sean Malone only recorded with the band while Robin
Zielhorst (Exivious) fills his shoes live. At least studio-wise this is still Cynic.
The remaining new member is Tymon Kruidenier (guitars, growls) also in
Exivious, which I have to mention is Europe's finest substitute for the old
Cynic (check out their demos, they rawk!). So actually, new Cynic is like
3/4ths the old band plus 1/4th a representative of their best students. No
matter where your angle is on the band, they're Cynic all the way!
As I already proved Cynic are still Cynic, but 2008 is not still 1993. Today the
ambience is way different than the time "Focus" shook the metal world with
its boldness. If such a thing as open-mindness exists, it's definitely dominant
nowadays while almost absent in 1993. To begin with, I believe an open mind
is dictated by many characteristics, much more than being tolerant of new
things alone. 1993 was a time that called for big balls to do what Cynic did
with "Focus". 2008 is a year when progress is celebrated through mixing
metal with other non-metal genres adding up to certain people's intellectual
profile. Cynic were never fakers, nor are they now. So, what room is there
for Cynic to prove themselves within the progressive metal frame, in a time
when metal is the one thing that needs to be hidden from post-metal basket
cases when in 1993 any other influence besides metal was a solid reason for
crucifixion in the metal community? Now that's a good example of how
circumstance can switch from black to white in only 15 years! This is a much
better time for bands like Cynic, but it's no easy task for long time missing
leaders to find place among their heirs. But I think Cynic have found the right
recipe.
Starting off, this album is brief in the progressive sense. By the time I finished
the above lines, I already had it playing for the second time. "Traced In Air"
doesn't try hard in proving Cynic's status as a band bound by progress. It's
what they do, as simple as that. But what about the other stuff? Well, if
you're thinking of death metal there's no other stuff. Cynic are no longer a
death metal oriented band. Of course Tymon is still growling behind Paul's
computerized vocals but musically speaking, there's not a single idea in this
album to be called death metal. On the other hand, if you're thinking of other
stuff like fusion, jazz or ambient, there's lots of it in "Traced In Air". Actually
2008 Cynic are simply a progressive metal band. And that's what they did to
re-enter the metal world smoothly. They made a choice over the audience
they wish for themselves, making the formation of a strict progressive metal
fan-base their prime target. Wise decision in my opinion (whether I agree or
disagree with it).
As I already said, this album is a genuine progressive metal album. Cynic
haven't lost their metal character over the years, there's lots of powerful
riffage to be found in here. Soloing is of the fusion type to the very core
while the rhythm section is the same monster as always. Labyrinthine themes
were never a stranger in Cynic's music and they're still here! They were
extremely technical back in the day and they still are, only in a different
sense. The new material is more into contemporary progressive metal (mid-
era Pain Of Salvation, Spiral Architect, Behind The Curtain) flourished with
fusion and jazzy ideas and structures. "Evolutionary Sleeper" came out ten
times better in the album, "The Unknown Guest" is the best track in here
linking the past with the future with a structure reminding of the old days (the
only song that does that in the album) but also with a brand new progressive
frenzy ending while "Integral Birth" is probably the best evidence of what is
to be expected from Cynic in the future.
The majority of the vocals is computerized. Remember the dialogues between
growls and computerized vocals in "The veil of Maya"? Forget about them.
Nowadays, growls are used as backing vocals and, in my opinion, only serve
the purpose of connecting Cynic to their death metal past. This leads me to
the one major flaw of the album; the vocals. Computerized vocals do not
have an edge to them and they are flat and tiresome. I don't want them to
wipe it out. It's just that this should be an extra in the vocal section, not the
main attraction. I don't think Cynic need such tricks, musically this album is
almost flawless for the genre it's serving, but I don't see a reason why they
shouldn't find a regular singer. They're actually a new band; I don't think
people would be treating them differently if they had a good clean singer.
Plus, this type of vocals is absolutely insipid and that was the most benign
word I could find. It diminishes the result a great deal while back in 1993 gave
them the element of surprise. This would be my only suggestion to the band.
Having reached the delicate issue of the grade, I know it will seem a bit low to
some of you, taken under consideration the review I gave the album. So, I
think it's the right time to reveal my conclusion about where the 1993 Cynic
grandeur lies. Although nowadays it's all about mixing metal with other
elements no matter if it's good or bad, Cynic did that successfully. They
weren't really guilty of any of their influences while some bands today hate
the fact that they are metal. Cynic were free back then in an intolerant
environment while most of today's bands are slaves in a completely tolerant
scene. It's all about bravery and awareness. I have to consider two things
before giving the final grade. It is plain stupid trying to put bands like Cynic in
boxes and tag them but I also can't help myself but missing the old
aggressive Cynic. No one can be like that, not even them. Progressive metal
bands with calm interludes are the rule today but I have come to think that in
the end, it's much harder to write an inspired full metal song than filling the
uninspired intervals with "something else". And that's a disturbing fact.

I have to admit, when I heard that Babe Ruth was recording a new album I was a bit concerned.
Babe Ruth hadn't made a new album in over 30 years. I thought what was it going to sound like?
Too many groups reunite, slap together some songs, and just make a mediocre record that will end up in the trash bin in a month.
But as I talked to different members of the band I became optimistic as they were all very enthusiastic about the project.
With a band that had so many diverse influences and had performed cover songs by Frank Zappa, Curtis Mayfield, and interpolate Enrico Morricone's haunting music into their music, I thought anything could be possible.
As the cover of the album shows this was going to be a combination of the old
Babe Ruth, and something very new.
The preamble to this album happened in the 80's when record producer Jellybean Benitez and a group the Bombers utilized Janita "Jenny" Haan to remake
"The Mexican", Babe Ruth's most popular song, which became a huge underground dance hit. It proved that the band could progress into even more modern musical influences.
Still, as I was downloading the album I really didn't know what to expect.
Would the band still have it's hard rock edge we all loved?
As I figuratively dropped the needle on the first track, "4 Dear Life", I turned up the volume and immediately recognized Alan Shacklock's soft Mexican influenced acoustic guitar sound. Then BOOM!, the hard rock sound of Babe Ruth kicked in scarring the hell out of me!
As Jenny sang her first lyric "My Healer, my lover, my savior, my cover, I ran from you for dear life", I knew this was going to be a serious record.
"Shacks" guitar was melodic and blazingly biting as usual, David Hewitt's signature bass sound drove the song, while Dave Punshon filled the in the gaps with a wall of keyboard sound rounding out the track. Ed Spevock's punching drum beat pushed the song as hard as it could go. I was very impressed.
But it's Jenny, who is simply FIERCE as she delivers her raw, powerful vocals on this song. Her double tracked vocals are killer and spot on.
Her delivery is impeccable, and the lyrics are excellent.
If anything, she's become a better, more controlled singer.
"4 Dear Life" kicks ass!
There was so much going on in the song I was almost overwhelmed by how powerful it was.
As the song faded away it seamlessly moved right into the title track "Que Pasa".
Again Alan Shacklock's south of the border guitar sound set the mood.
Dave Hewitt takes over with a driving bass line. The band sets the mood as Janita sang "My heart is on fire, sun burning with desire" with a much more understated vocal than the fierceness of the first track.
Placed deep in the mix there was a constant but controlled rapping vocal.
As the song progresses Janita seduces you with her hauntingly beautiful pleading; "Que pasa, my lover?"
Towards the end of the song the B Boy rap was brought up into the mix exposing it's influence in the song. It fit right into the mood, displaying the complexity of the song and the bands new influences.
"Que Pasa" is one bad ass song that will haunt you for a long time.
As the next song began I realized that this album's track selection had been thought out very well. "Sun, Moon, and Stars" propels the album into another rocker.
Still mysteriously haunting, this was a harder sounding track than "Que Pasa" had been.
This was another true Babe Ruth track with the bands "sound" fully intact.
I found the bass line particularly driving, and again deep in the mix there was the sound of some very fine record scratching.
"Mother Tongue" leaves no doubt as to the rap/scratch influence as it begins with the suggestion to dance and scratches it's way into the beat driven by David Hewitt's excellent bass thumping.
Hewitt is just fantastic on this album, constantly driving the beat, not just following it. But once again it's Jenny's vocals that suck you into the track with a venom.
Alan Shacklock's guitar vaguely reminded me of an older Ventures/Shadows sound.
Just I realized that, he broke into a cover of The Shadows "Apache" and it couldn't have fit into the song better. The song went right back into the ending of "Mother Tongue" with Jenny delivering more powerful and excellent vocals.
"Mother Tongue" is another great Babe Ruth song with the added element of the rap/scratch sound the band has come to love.
At this point I questioned would older Babe Ruth rock & roll purist fans be put off by this new turn of the bands sound?
I don't think so, as this is still first and foremost a Babe Ruth rock album.
The rapping/scratching sounds on this album fits right in and it shows how else their music was interpreted by different set of cultural ears.
The band brilliantly took the feedback from their newer fans, and channeled it into this record.
In fact with repeated listening I think this newer sound is essential and keeps the album from possibly being just another boring repeat record in the sense of a band just doing the exact same thing over and over again.
If anything Babe Ruth is going to gain more fans with it's new sound, which I feel is groundbreaking.
Babe Ruth's new sound has a definite place in Rock & Roll.
But Babe Ruth isn't an American idol cover band. Their a band that forged their own path in the 70's and came out on the other side of the millennium with a whole new sound never forgetting their past. I think this is because of Alan Shacklock's ability to interpolate so many different influences of music into the bands sound.
By the time "Doncha Wanna Dance" started it finally dawned upon me that this is a concept album as much as any other record has been called a concept album.
While Sgt. Pepper became the blueprint for the concept album John and Paul always said it was merely a collection of songs that fit well together and in the end it formed a bit of a loose concept album. Paul said that he had a loose idea to act as a "cover band" with the Sgt. Pepper moniker.
Not to take anything away from that masterpiece, but The Beatles themselves said the "concept" was more of an afterthought.
But Que Pasa seems to be much more designed to be an actual concept album as a whole identity, deliberately thought out to incorporate the bands old sound with it's new B Boy influences.
"Doncha Wanna Dance" is a full fledged dance track that still has a heavy dose of rock & roll in it as Jenny tells you to get off your butt and shake it.
It ends with a blazing, no holds barred, Steve Vai sounding guitar solo by "Shack" that rips into the song just as Eddie Van Halen's guitar sliced through Michael Jackson's "Beat It".
After all, it was Alan Shacklock's ballsy guitar playing that first got me into this band in the early 70's, and he's still got it!
By this point I was totally hooked and impressed by this album.
As the album progresses their signature "Mexican" sound permeates the rest of the songs.
Taking you straight to the border with it's Latin influences, blazing guitar, and (synthesized?) horns, I was just knocked out that there was so much going on in every track, yet it wasn't too much as to make it a jumbled mess.
Just to make sure we didn't forget who made this album, it closes with a remake of their signature song "The Mexican".
It's often dangerous territory when a band remakes a song, especially one that's their best known hit, but even after 35 years the band pulls it off without a hitch.
These guys wanted to make sure to leave us no doubt as to who they are.
"The Mexican Millennium" as recorded by Babe Ruth, is also featured on Sony's Playstation 2's break dancing game "B-Boy".
The entire band is in excellent form here, everybody is at the top of their game.
Like fine wine, they got better with the passage of time.
You can tell the band really wanted to make this album, and were chomping at the bit to be heard again.
It's really rare when a band can reinvent itself and still stay true to their original sound and root influences.
With "Que Pasa" Babe Ruth has broken new ground and opened themselves up to a whole new flock of fans.
A special mention must go out to Alan Shacklock's superb guitar playing, songwritting, and production of this album.
It's a very well produced album, everything fits where it's supposed to be.
The man's got a great ear, and utilizes everybody's talents to the fullest.
Hewitt's bass, Spevock's drums, Punshon's keys and, of course, Jenny Haan's great vocals rip this album up.
As a former recording engineer myself I know how hard it can be to mix an album and get everything heard without having it sound like a cacophony of three bands playing at the same time!
It's not easy creating a cohesive wall of sound, and yet still managing to have the "space" for everything to be heard.
As the great guitarist Steve Morse told us "Too many notes sounds like . . . Tumeni Notes"!
While "First Base" is still my, and many fans favorite Babe Ruth album, this album ranks right up there with their best material.
Little did I dream of some seven years ago when I first started my Babe Ruth tribute page, mainly because there was hardly a mention of them anywhere on the Web, that one day they'd be back together, recording again, and forging a new musical sound.
There's simply been no band quite like Babe Ruth, past or present.
They are unique in a sea of sameness and banality that permeates today's music.
This is totally new music, from an older band that's worthy to be heard.
Without giving up their own signature sound, they've blazed a new adventurous trail, incorporating even more musical influences than they did before.
This music deserves to be heard by a wider audience, it should be out there in the mainstream.
I've played this music to the older people of my 70's rock generation and they like it, and also to members of the younger college age crowd who dig it as well.
I've listened to this record over and over again and it stands up to repeated listenings. The truth is that right now I can't stop listening to it!
I'm convinced it will become a classic.
Do yourself, and the band a favor, and go to their web site and buy the instant download of this music. This is exactly the type of music we need to be supporting in 2007 and beyond.
All I can say is that Babe Ruth's "Que Pasa" is one great album!

Album Review:
Long-running British hard rockers Thunder are being a bit presumptive when they call an album Robert Johnson's Tombstone, since their brand of AC/DC-style crunch owes only slightly more to the blues than Be Bop Deluxe owes to Charlie Parker. Indeed, the opening title track is a bit of a laugh, a shamefully earnest bit of white-boy blooze that simply doesn't come off very well. With that out of the way, however, Thunder return to what made them, if not famous, then at least reasonably well known in certain circles: punchy three-chord hard rock delivered with maximum swagger and minimum fuss. Highlights include the surprisingly thoughtful meditation on fame and art in "Andy Warhol Said," and the seven-minute boogie workout "Last Man Standing." While Robert Johnson's Tombstone won't win Thunder any new acolytes, fans will be entirely pleased.

Album Review:
If the grunge revolution hadn't occurred in the early '90s, there's a chance that Thunder would have followed the likes of Whitesnake and Bon Jovi up the charts. Already blowing up back home in the U.K. (with their 1990 debut Backstreet Symphony), the group enjoyed some spins on Headbanger's Ball in the U.S., and made admirers the likes of David Coverdale and Axl Rose. But unlike most of the other similarly styled metal bands that seemed to vanish during the early to mid-'90s, Thunder continued to issue albums and 2005 saw the release of The Magnificent Seventh!. Unlike some other acts from the hair metal era who decided to update their sound upon returning to the scene in the early 21st century, Thunder continue on in the melodic rock direction they've followed all along, as evidenced by such tracks as "I Love You More Than Rock n' Roll" and "Monkey See, Monkey Do."

Albums:
Blue Guitars is a Blues album released by Chris Rea on October 14th 2005 consisting
of eleven CDs, one DVD and a full colour book, including paintings by the artist,
liner notes and song lyrics. The album is an ambitious project with the 137 songs
recorded over the course of 1 1/2 years with a work schedule - according to Chris Rea
himself - of twelve hours a day, seven days a week. Initially the project was inspired
by Bill Wyman's "Blues Odyssey" and can be called an "odyssey" in its own right,
for depicting a journey through the various epochs of Blues Music, starting at its
African origins and finishing with modern-time Blues from the 60s and 70s. Subsequently
the eleven CDs are titled the following: "Beginnings", "Country Blues", "Lousiana &
New Orleans", "Electric Memphis Blues", "Texas Blues", "Chicago Blues", "Blues Ballads",
"Gospel Soul Blues & Motown", "Celtic & Irish Blues", "Latin Blues" and "60s & 70s".
The album is the fifth and last record in a line of Blues records Chris Rea has made
since recovering from a serious disease at the turn of the millennium and promising
himself a return to his Bluesy roots in the event that he survived. According to Rea
"Blue Guitars" will be his last solo effort; however, he will continue to release albums
as a member of the band "Memphis Fireflies".
The eleven separate records which comprise "Blue Guitars" could as well stand on their own;
in combination, however, they provide a journey through the different epochs of the Blues,
showing the various components that have been added to the original African Blues over time,
the changes in instrumentation, style, lyrical expression and thematic implications. Thereby
Chris Rea and his band imitate the various styles and lyrical topics, creating an instantly
recognisable atmosphere on each record, with the first few songs usually setting up the
direction in which the record is going and then developing to various styles within the field
